Golf Experienced Small 2010 Declines in Golfers and Rounds:
Play Impacted by “Great Recession”

GolfThe number of golfers fell slightly in 2010 to 26.1 million, down 3.6% from the 27.1 million recorded in 2009, according to NGF’s annual golf participation study. That marks the third consecutive year of declines in both measures, not surprising, considering the severity of the economic recession that has affected consumer behavior during the period.

Off-Course Retail Supply – Consolidation ContinuesNGF tracks changes in the supply of off-course golf specialty retail stores (like Edwin Watts, Golfsmith, etc.). There was a net drop of 154 stores in the past year, or 11%. Stand-alone “Mom & Pop” stores had the highest net losses and national chains the lowest.
